All Residents with a diagnosis of diabetes or who are at risk of developing diabetes are assisted to manage their diet, activity and medication regimes to maintain good health.
We have Diabetes Lead in our Nursing Team and a Senior Carer who is a Diabetes Champion. All care staff complete Diabetes training as part of their e-learning courses. It is important for our staff to be able to recognise signs and symptoms of diabetes and take preventative actions as well as being aware of the normal range and symptoms of hyper- or hypoglycaemia for each resident with diabetes.
We work closely with the NHS Diabetes Nurse to review or give advice about any changing conditions. We also work with an external qualified nutritionist who can provide nutritional support in response to any change in weight or eating habits. We follow directives from GPs and Dieticians which include following a diabetic (low carb, sugar-free) diet.
A Nutrition Board just outside the Kitchen displays the dietary requirements of all our residents so that all staff not just the catering team can see who is on regular, fortified or diabetic diets, including the various levels of the
IDDSI Framework - International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative that uses common terminology for describing food textures and drink thicknesses to improve safety for individuals who have swallowing difficulties.
